By Sean T Saunders

In the last forty years there have been quite a few changes in how video games are conceived and designed. The people who are involved in designing modern computer games have changed and so have the skills that are needed to make a computer game that is functional as well as entertaining. Computer game designer jobs consist of initially thinking of the concept of the game and then designing it. Computer game designer jobs are diverse but most of them necessitate creative, technical and writing competencies. Initially, video games were often the creation of one person, called the lead programmer.

The lead programmer did all of the video game designer jobs required for the game but then computer systems with better features began to develop. This led to gaming industry becoming much more complicated. One person couldn?t do all of the tasks that were needed any more, as a result different aspects of the design job were seperated and individually assigned to different persons. The lead programmer stuck with writing code while the other game designer jobs consisted of writing the storyline and creating, the evironmental set up, characters and game play for the video game. Most new games are created by a team of people.

When the graphic game that is being designed is complicated and carries a huge budget, there could be a couple of lead designers and a large team of junior designers. There are various different job functions that now fall under the category of game design. The kinds of jobs available for junior game designers are level designer or environmental designer and systems designer or game mechanics designer and also report writing and game documentation. Many video game designers started in the business as game testers, so they have experience in the kinds of design errors that usually happen while creating beta video games.

The lead designer is the person who comes up with the basic concept and ideas for a new video game and is often the team leader for various other junior creative designers. The lead designer coordinates all of the work that is being done by the members of his team, who will be functioning on various other aspects of the game development process. The lead designer is is the main person who makes all the important decisions regarding the various aspects of the computer game project and will make sure that the team members are communicating and cooperating effectively. The lead designer is in charge of presenting the results of the project to other game business companies and he is also responsible for organizing written documentation.

The junior designers on the team that are accountable for balancing and designing the mechanics for the graphic game are titled systems designers or game mechanic designers. As computer games become more complex and more extensive, the task of creating the missions, levels and environments for the games has taken more importance in the design process. This job would be undertaken by the environmental designer or level designer. A junior member of game design team is often tasked with the job of creating the user interface design. The design team most often has a writer who is responsible for scripting the game story line, dialogues, journals and various other content.
