Use Fonts

By Antony Stelling

The best brochures don't necessarily have the best layout or pictures. Another major factor in design that goes unnoticed is font style. There is usually a lot of text in a brochure, so its appearance is important. For the best results, use your artistic side when you choose the font for your brochure.

Have you ever thought about the history of Times Roman? It is one of the most regularly used fonts in the fields of academia and in computing. Before the Second World War, it was created for newspapers who wanted an easy-to-work-with font for their presses. Since that time, Times Roman has cultivated a distinguished reputation, much like the newspapers, that first used it. Basically, it is a simple font, but it makes by staying out of the way. In the way that it forces the writer's words to stand on their own, this font stands out.

The font border is a time honored technique that really pops. Most software allows you to add many different color borders to your text. This simple outline can make a big difference in the visibility of your text. This is perfect for the front of your brochure, or even headlines or headers.

Glow effects are a specialized font border that you need in your arsenal. I'm referring to the technique of using rays of light to emphasize text, like you've seen on posters. A common feature of many programs, chances are you can easily add this effect. This can be used with borders, but save glowing text for times when you really want something to stand out. For those super important words, you can't go wrong with the glow effect. Glow is particularly effective at adding energy to important words, prices, or calls to action.

If you need some color in your brochure font, the gradient filler is your friend. A gradient allows you to use two colors. The colors will blend nicely together across your text for an eye-popping effect. The gradient can create a pleasing effect that you just can't get anywhere else.

A true artist knows how to use shadow and opacity together. By using a combination of shadows and changing their opacity, you can make some cool effects. This can give you a subtle shadow look that can't be created any other way. Take some time with your favorite design software to play around with shadows and opacity and see what you can come up with.

Don't forget to look for new fonts online to spice up your brochure. You shouldn't have a problem finding free fonts on the web. It might take longer, but making sure that your font matches your layout will ensure that your brochure is effective and interesting. Sit back, relax, and browse some fonts for fun. The best font hasn't been made yet, so buckle down and get to work.

With your new found knowledge of fonts, your brochure will look artistic and professional. As you master each skill, you will constantly find new ways to make fascinating brochures.
