What an ISTQB Qualification Shows to an Employer

By Abby Crackworth

In the early 00s it was recognised that there was a gap in terms of assessing the merits of software testers in an academic way. This made it hard for employers to hire people from outside of their immediate experience, or gain some level of understanding of newly trained software testers' skills. It was clear that some kind of regulatory body was required to mange the assessment of testers. The ISTQB, or International Software Testing Qualifications Board, changed all this when it was founded in 2002.

The thing that distinguishes this qualification is that it's well recognised and applies directly to one particular field, rather than being a general management or programming qualification. The reception for it has been good to say the least, with sixty countries recognising it as the official qualification for testers. It is a brilliant way to set yourself up for a job in this specialised field.

To allow for further categorisation of software tester potential, the qualification comes in three levels. For an established software tester the foundation level is more of a portal to further achievements, as it describes the field more than trains you in it, and doesn't touch on the deeper issues of software testing management. For people that aren't yet software testers or programmers, or perhaps don't intend to be, it allows you to show your familiarity with the field to a prospective employer for office jobs.

Many people that take the advanced level of the ISTQB tests are already working in the field. This is a way for people to take what they have learned and put it into action alongside management scenarios, and consider deeper levels of business thinking. For people looking for promotion within a company it can be most useful, and allows a manager to see things from a wider point of view than that of just a tester.

The expert level of the ISTQB takes things up a notch, as you'd expect. In this area students are expected to progress to a level where they can think about the improvement of the whole software testing process. This requires good management skills, and a thorough understanding of the art of software testing. Gaining this qualification will show that you are a good person to have on any serious project, as a leader and trouble-shooter.
