A Little Overpriced - HVAC Business Software Critique

By Samantha Hall

I think staying current with this type of application is particularly important since it holds so much of your personal financial data.

I'll be the first to admit that. But when my computer died and I needed to get into my personal Quicken files, I first attempted to read the old Quicken file with my QuickBooks software - why not just set it up as another file and avoid the cost of a new Quicken license" I was forced to upgrade since the feature of Quicken that allows automatically downloading transactions becomes deactivated after the program is 3 years old. There's no good reason for this, other than for Intuit to force you to pay for an upgrade. This BY FAR is the way to go - everything is nicely organized and all the values are now correct. The down side to this is I'm going to have to leave Microsoft Money on the computer for a couple years just in case I need to look up an old transaction.

I have everything on 1 page to start with. I can switch from one account to the next with one click. But overall, no weird error messages or restarting, it just worked. One major gripe with 2008 was how bug-ridden the one step update process was. I was very nervous buying this software after the really poor reviews it got but there was not a superior alternative so I took the plunge. I looked at Money Dance but it's just too basic for what I wanted. Hours later my stuff is still importing one transaction at a time, and each transaction requires several clicks. This is not going to work for active traders and investors! I consistently get CC-501 errors. Right now they are offering Quicken Home and Business at a 35% discount and if you are thinking about purchasing it you might want to read all the reviews. With no copy and paste I have to repeat the set up for each one. You can't categorize multiple sub-categories at once.

It isn't perfect, and I haven't quite figured out how use some of its functionality - in particular tracking our investments, but overall I'm quite happy. My bank said they cannot download my transaction to this accounting software because they do not use the newest file transfer systems.

All in all, after dumping the tax forms and correcting the categories to meet the tax form issues with TurboTax, it works well enough to buy a new copy every two years. Be aware that when you edit out the duplicates on the CC transactions, it will also correct the checking account balances.

I upgraded to Quicken H&B 2011 from the 2005 version. To be honest, I just don't see how this is really any better.

As a software engineer myself, honestly this software is the worst one I have ever experienced. The first day when I tried to use it, it has a fundamental bug to get the basic jobs done.

A good thought, but of course, Intuit makes that impossible. So I anted up and bought the new Quicken.
