How To Improve Your Skills At Tower Defence Games

By Terry Ward

You are the master, the one who controls this glorious army. In tower defence games, war quickly becomes a near reality as you find yourself leading that glorious army to defend against your attackers. Your only namesake is the tower you remain stationed at. Your opponents are brutal foes ready to tear down your gates. Your tools are your noble army prepared to fight to the death to save this building.

Sometimes called "Defend your Castle", they require the purchase and manipulation of various types of army units, placed to defend against enemies. The abilities and faults of these units as well as the variety at your disposal are the bread and butter, the core ingredients of the strategy for this game. To improve at this game, one should strive to master a variety of tricks that will help defend against enemies.

Know your enemy and know what they can do, because knowing this means you can react accordingly. It is important to observe carefully how your foes behave, not only in case you need to make a decision during an enemy wave, or round, but also in the event of meeting that opponent later on. Sometimes you can deal extra damage against certain enemies, and keeping track of this will lead to a huge advantage if you choose to play through a second time.

It may seem that turret which attacks extremely slowly and does little damage is useless, but such a unit is probably there for a reason. Perhaps, if your turrets take damage from enemies, you can place the slower, weaker ones in front of the stronger ones to take damage instead, keeping your stronger ones alive and firing for a longer period of time. It is to your advantage to know how to use your troops.

In some versions, you can place turrets or other pieces directly in the way of your attackers. This brings up a very potent tactic to give yourself more time to defend. Place your troops in a way to force the enemy to take longer to reach their goal. If there is a very straight path the enemies can walk, maneuver your army in a way to make your opponents walk a longer path.

Some versions of the game will provide extra units, commonly among them being various types of traps. Placing traps efficiently is very important, otherwise it will lead to a waste of resources. Just a few traps will usually work fine for most games.

Know the difference between hiring more army units and upgrading your existing units to be more powerful. What you pay for is what you get, and with gold often being a primary but scarce currency, be careful with it and decide how to efficiently use it. The mechanic of a currency is included to make it more difficult, and sometimes it will take some effective budgeting to win.

Tower Defence games can run the gambit from easy to difficult. Some may be simple, and others complicated. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is to have fun. If you have fun playing them, then you will improve, and you will enjoy yourself while improving, too.
