The RS 160 didn't have enough RANGE to cover my home, and wanted the increased range and AGC (automatic gain control) to tame loud passages. I am thrilled with the new RS 180!
They are just Ni-Cad AAA batteries so you should just be able to replace them with standard, inexpensive rechargeable AAAs when they eventually die. Build quality is excellent.
Here's a quick review for you. The quality is absolutely great, and the range is incredible. His first comments about the product came before it was even out of the box. The outside of the box literally has instructions on how to open the packaging!
I get perfect reception in 97 percent of my two story house and most of the back yard. They make house work a LOT less boring.
The controllers are laid out to make it easy to find the correct knob without having to take the headphones off. There is also an ALC button on the base that amplifies voices -- useful when you have the volume turned down low.
He is one of the most critical individuals you have ever met when it comes to hearing vocals and music. At the youthful age of 81 we had tried just about everything to accommodate his auditory sensitivities. I often hear things the rest of the family does not. I was excited about this alone, but I also learned that the volume controls are flat and therefore will not accidentally change as per my first point made above. Here's what I found about the 180's after one day of use. Third, I've generally been satisfied with the range of these headphones. I live in a 2 story, 2900 square-foot house, and I typically get reception just about anywhere in the house. The RS 180 features ALC, which will boost mid-range in the interest of speech intelligibility. If you find it is too much, you can turn it off. I bought & returned 2 other different brands but none compared to these. Prior to making this purchase, I ordered the RS190s thinking that spending more $ meant a better product.
This was, no doubt, influenced by the headphone amp of my 5200ES. You would think a $1500.00 dollar receiver could do better, but alas that is a nit that I shall pick another day. I can't vouch for the range though; I have little reason to prance around with these. But as for upstairs and downstairs in the same house, no worries with these headphones. I wish it were a little heavier because it's hard to turn the base on and off with one hand without pushing it over. The headphones fit easily over the top for storage and charging.
