Hedge Fund Management Software Desired Features

By Adriana Noton

Hedge fund management software is getting increasingly more efficient, with automation functions across the front, middle and back office plugged in to each other and the general ledger to provide a single integrated system. It captures trades, handles portfolio management and integrates it with investor accounting to create an end to end solution with real time updates based on market data and new positions taken. The true potential of this system comes into play only when managers try to diversify into derivative products and different global instruments.

Let's take a look at some of the more desirable features in this automation system. The front office has to have both real time monitoring and FIX connections for broker interface. Other features that can be listed here include order management, scenario analysis, hedging overlay and modeling.

But to truly outperform rival funds, the system has to be able to manage a diverse collection of instruments and currencies. This means everything from bank debt and swaps to equity derivatives, options, futures, and fixed income instruments like asset backed securities. If one system can manage all this, then the fund will provide higher returns as compared to similar funds which have to use multiple IT packages or incur manual administration overheads.

One data point of entry is provided to the system at trade capture. This triggers system-wide updates to all automation functions, reports and tools. Routing and order management are handled. The system provides reconciliation with full automation of corporate actions including coupon payments, dividends and stock splits.

With the workflow automated from trade execution to investor accounting, the firm can quickly add new clients and products, and aim for higher trade volumes. The scalability allows for growth without new overheads and staffing requirements. Audit trails for everything the hedge fund management software does is a standard feature, with full compliance before and after trades.

Reports are provided on a dashboard with real time updates and plugged in market data. Once the front and middle office finish processing trades, the data automatically flows into the general ledger. Every transaction impacts the ledger, so it is the best place for warehousing data that can be used for generating reports.

More report types and filtering options help in assessing and managing risk with exposure reporting. Performance attribution is a necessary feature, categorized by trader, funds, sector and strategy. Profit & Loss (net, realized and unrealized) has to be visible on a daily, open-to-date, month-to-date and year-to-date basis. P&L has to be updated by the system in real time with the market and change in positions taken.

Hedge fund management software is not meant to replace investment managers. It will, however, be irreplaceable once fund managers get used to it. There is no other way to achieve the same scalability and high growth rate without incurring additional administrative expenses. With the recent availability of these packages on hosted SaaS platforms, even the initial upfront investment required for buying, installing and maintaining the package and the required IT hardware has been eliminated.
