5 Unique Storage Items for Compact Discs

By Ella B Spada

Storage devices for compact discs include jewel cases, jackets, digipaks, sleeves, and spindles.

CDs may have taken over the old vinyl records previously in terms of durability and quality of the music they can play, but they are still not fully unbreakable. They are still fragile items that must be protected. Thus, different disk storage items can be used to keep them safe. Check out this article to discover the different types of disk packages.

Jewel case

Jewel cases are the basic for storing CDs and DVDs. These types of cases are produced from rigid clear plastic which will supply enough protection to the CD or DVD inside. Inside this case is a semi-rigid plastic insert that will firmly hold and also lock the CD or DVD in place. It has 2 sides which are connected to one another by a hinge that snaps into place during closure to secure the case and also the disk inside it. While other kinds of storage methods may have come up, the jewel case remains popular because of its rigidity; and not to mention all its different appealing colors. Jewel cases may be more expensive compared to the other kinds, however, that has not stopped people from buying.

Jackets

Jackets are another way of keeping disks. They are made of cardboard and have an identical appearance to the jacket for the 33-1/3 rpm vinyl records. Although they may not be able to provide the same degree of protection as the jewel cases, they are more affordable and occupy less storage place. Contrary to jewel cases, jackets don't have any system which will keep the disks securely inside. But they can have interesting prints or labels on the back and front.

Digipak

Digipaks are becoming increasingly popular for a number of reasons. A registered product of AGI Media, this particular storage device offers a number of configurations for storing the disk inside. Depending on the size, it has many panels to carry a number of disks inside. It also has semi-rigid molded inserts glued inside each panel to firmly secure the disk in place. Not only are these storage items more cost-efficient, their cardboard material make them favored choice of consumers with ecological concerns.

Sleeves

Paper sleeves are the most inexpensive kind of storage device for CDs or DVDs. As the name suggests, they're sleeves made of paper materials. Some paper sleeves may also have a window on the middle that's protected with plastic to provide a view of the disk inside. While paper sleeves are very inexpensive, they obviously do not provide much protection to the disks inside them. However, they are very handy and they consume very little of space. As an alternative to paper sleeves, there are also plastic sleeves that are available. These are just like paper sleeves, being inexpensive and very handy, but they can guard the disks inside them from wetness, like a liquid spill, unlike those made of paper.

Spindles

Spindles allow for storage of many disks piled on top of each other through the rigid plastic spindle in the middle, that are then covered by transparent plastic to secure them. These are mainly utilized in stores that sell blank disks since they can't provide much protection for disks that already have data stored on them.

Disks should always be kept in their cases after being played so that they will be protected from dust and scratches and will stay in good condition for as long as possible.
