Professional Quality - Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphones Review

By Gabriella Peterson

These headphones have a dynamic range (GREAT bass and clear treble, you can hear things in songs you had never noticed before, individual backup singers' voices, etc.), they are very comfortable, and you can barely hear them when someone else is using them at a high volume. OK, I'll stop being a salesman for Sony. Poor quality recordings, or overly compressed MP3s sound terrible compared to what these headphones are capable of. Bit i found them to be a bit fatiguing on the ears. There is a small visible wire from the top to the phone itself on both sides though. Not to mention the fact that they only have about two hours of listening time on them. Before buying these, I had never heard the "digital" reproduction of the vibration of the piano strings when the keys are played hard. The only con I would like to point out is that the earpads do tend to wear out after prolonged use. I have a large head, and you can jack these out to fit even the largest head, yet they still fit snugly on my small-headed room mate. The audio reproduction is decent, but not exceptional. For example, these are the type of headphones you would want to carry with you to public places (bus rides, airplane trips) instead of headphones like the Sennheiser HD595's. The price is worthy for what you get.

I tried a pair at Target. The sound quality is perfect, and it isn't overpowering. The quality of sound and comfort is the best that I have experienced so far. You'll still hear dog barking, people yelling, jet engines, etc. The 7506's internal wiring is a bit different, using a separate ground for the left and right channels, rather than the single ground for both channels used in the V6.

The phones are closed back and achieve a very good seal as to outside noise.

So nobody was around. The SONY 7506 achieves very serious sound isolation - it cuts ambient noise of high orders of magnitude quite effectively (like inside a small aircraft), and doesn't transmit ANY sound to the outside. These headphones more than do the job. But in rare circumstances or in the recording studio, it may be necessary. I'd buy another in a heartbeat! A scare when they are folded like the ear piece got bent up, but they weren't!

All I have to say is that hearing music through these is unlike hearing music through a radio or regular ear buds, or even normal headphones. Simply put, find a pro audio store or a friend that has these headphones, give them a listen, and then come back and buy them, because that is what you will want to do. Also, they were tighter on the head and gave me the feeling that they would be uncomfortable for long sittings.
