Lenovo First Exceeded Dell To Be The Second-largest PC Maker

By Lucy King

A report shows that in the third quarter, HP's PC sales grew 5.3% compared with the same period of the last year. Lenovo exceeded Dell to become the world's second-largest PC maker for the first time.

The report shows that in the third quarter, Hewlett-Packard's market share in the global PC market is 17.7%, (http://www.tjskl.org.cn/products/minerals_metallurgy-m22000000/)slightly higher than last year's 17.3%. HP will determine before the end of October whether to sell, retain or spin off PC business. The Wall Street analysts had expected Hewlett-Packard announced to split PC division in premature time may lead to some consumers not purchase the company's products.

Lenovo's global share of the third quarter was 13.5%, higher than the 11.1% at the same period of the last year. It also exceeds Dell's 11.6%. It is mainly due to the sale of laptop together with Japan's NEC and it has taken an active marketing measure.

PC's sales growth is slowing down because consumers are increasingly turning to smart phones and tablet PCs such as Apple's iPad. The economic stall results in the pressure of the technology hardware spending. In the third quarter, the U.S. PC shipments grew only 1.1 percent to 17.8 million units. While this growth performance was poor, it is the first time of the PC sales growth in three quarters. HP's third-quarter sales in the U.S. market grew 15.1%. The analyst says although there may be the possibility of spinning off PC business, t HP gives an appearance that the business is as usual. This move seems to play the effect."

The data show that in the third quarter, the worldwide PC shipments reached 91.8 million units, a growth of 3.2%compared with the same period of the last year. This growth rate is lower than previously expected. The analyst had expected the third-quarter PC shipments grew 5.1%.

While the outlook of the PC (http://www.tjskl.org.cn/snap_on_leather_belts-suppliers/) sales market is bleak, but China and other emerging markets are still rare bright spots. PC industry's performance has not been normal seasonal. As expected, the PC sales of the returning school season in the mature market were disappointing, confirming that the consumer PC market is still weak. IPad and smart phones and other non- PC devices are popular, leading consumers to reduce spending in the PC field.

The analyst also states as the PC market growth is slowing down, the merger between manufacturers has become more obvious trends in the industry. In this quarter, Lenovo's recent merger with NEC and its acquisition of German company Medion electronic stressed such a trend.
