Laptop Repair: How To Do Minor Work At Home

By Bill Shattner

Probably the best piece of advice when it comes to home laptop repair is that most people should not do it. Even though some repairs can be done easily, there is still a great deal of knowledge that is necessary, so if a person does not know what they are doing they should contact a pro. This advice is for those who have some expertise about computers.

It is prudent to gather all the necessary tools before starting any job. Most notebooks can be fixed with just a few different sized Philips head screwdrivers, some tweezers and a set of needle nosed pliers. Some people also choose to use an anti static mat or wristband, which can reduce the chances of damages due to static.

Static electricity can kill a computer so controlling the environment in which the work is done is a must. Carpet can cause a lot of extra static electricity so it is best avoided. If this type of work is going to be done often it might be worthwhile to purchase anti static wrist straps, which will remove any chance that the computer is harmed by static.

Before cracking the computer open a person should always save their data. There are a number of things that could go wrong and fry the hard drive. Backing up this data beforehand is the best way to make sure it is not lost.

One of the most difficult parts of doing work on a computer is putting it back together afterwards. Being disconnecting anything it is best to know how it reconnects. The person could also make a diagram of the inside so that they have something to follow when reassembling the machine.

These tips will get a person started but a more in depth study should be done before attempting any home laptop repair. If the person does not know what they are doing it is probably best to seek the help of a professional. With a little knowledge and study a person should be able to fix most of their own problems.
