Educating Parents on Video Games

By Clifford Gill

Newly developed video games add to a list of things parents have to learn about. If a parent becomes educated on various game consoles, it is important for them to learn about the games that go with them. Here is a brief glossary of video gaming genre acronyms to help familiarize parents with the terminology their kids are using.

RPG are Role Playing Games allow for players to be a prominent game character. Character options are endless depending on the game. RPG are usually played among other contestants worldwide via internet.

Vehicle Simulation games or VSG allow players to drive several different types of engine powered vehicles. There are many lifelike VSG provided by the top game consoles. For training and studying VSG are used in pilot school and for the military. VSG have excellent add-ons including realistic vehicle controls.

CMS - This genre includes video games that incorporate Construction and Management Systems. In these players can build cities, manage farms, build businesses or run countries. The main focus of CMS games are profit and economics. Warfare is not the primary focus of these games. The focus is on developing a self-sustaining, vibrant community or business. Using building and management skills properly, a player should be able to create and sustain a plausible lifestyle in the game.

RTS stands for Real Time Systems and TBS stands for Turn Based Systems; these are strategy games. In real time strategy games, the player must develop strategy "on the fly" as the game progresses, whereas turn-based allows time for the player to analyze the situation, work out a strategy and evaluate possible outcomes prior to exercising their turn. All RTS require computer or internet based platforms. TBS, on the other hand, can include board games. With real time strategy video games, players are reacting to a constantly changing environment, developing solutions to obstacles to achieve the best possible outcomes. Many theorists believe that many of these RTS games help promote the creative thinking and problem solving skills that are found in top executives in business today.

Most video game categories do not have acronyms. Classifications such as action or action-adventure, warfare, shooting or party games follow the classic definitions, just as movie genres do.
