The Web has been buzzing about the Google tablet in the past couple of weeks since Taiwanese site DigiTimes reported about it. Supposedly, the search website giant's slate will be a 7-inch and many indulge in speculation that it may stand to compete at once with the Amazon's Kindle Fire. Will Google truly jump into the tablet PERSONAL COMPUTER wars?
The Logical Next Step
According to specialists, the tablet Computer is Google's most probable next move after going into smartphones and portables (Nexus and Chromebooks, respectively). Google CEO Eric Schmidt told an Italian paper that the company plans a tablet PC "of the highest quality" that may roll out in the following half a year.
Of course, industry commentators were fast to point out why Google would wish to join the tablet fray. A Google tablet can enhance Android-powered tablet sales and increase share of the market. Considering Google's current purchase of Motorola Mobility, the company is absolutely capable of making the Google tablet and run Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), on it.
The $64000 Question
The question on everyone's mind is, which market will the Google tablet target? At the moment, Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle Fire are the kings of slates; the iPad reigns over high-end slates while the Kindle Fire marks the bottom of the spectrum. Should the Google tablet select to compete with number 1 iPad, it'll have to bust out prime quality hardware. On the other hand, if it chooses to contest with the Kindle Fire, there's no doubt that it will also need to sell tablets at a loss. Pros accept that Google may pick the latter. The company can afford to take losses on hardware sales, as it can offset those losses with ad money.
The search website giant hasn't yet released any info about the Google tablet yet, so we're going to have to wait for more concrete data. Should Google release their own tablet, how would it fare against the slates already in the market in a tablet Personal computer comparison? What hardware will we see on it? We'll just need to be patient.
