The Pros And Cons Of Homeschooling

By Owen Jones

Home schooling is the name of educating children at home rather than at some institute like school. It is mostly carried out by parents but in some cases tutors educate the children at their home. Home schooling is also called home education or home-based education.

Home schooling is carried out in the informal setting of your home rather than in the formal educational location of public or private schools.

It is thought to be a permissible and viable option to formal school education. Most of the advocates of home schooling think that it is better than other schooling options for many factors. It is considered to be a better system because it has some extraordinary advantages which formal schooling does not.

Firstly, parents claim that the results of their children's tests are better whilst home schooling than in private or public schools.

Secondly, home schooling helps the children in their studies and offers personalized instructions based on the individual requirements of the students.

Thirdly, more attention is given to each child in home schooling rather than other types of schooling.

Fourthly, home schooling offers a more controlled environment for learning. Parents or home tutors have control over the learning environment and can change it to suit the individual needs of the student.

Fifthly, some parents would rather home schooling for religious reasons. They do not agree with the content being taught in public schools which is why they prefer to educate their children in the pure teachings of their religion.

Sixthly, some parents cannot afford private school and so prefer home schooling rather than public schools because of the advantages of home schooling.

Last but not least, home schooling has proved more effective in the improvement of the moral character of children, which is due to the individualized treatment and well-controlled learning environment of home schooling.

Many teachers and educational institutions are against the idea of home schooling. There are different reasons for this opposition.

First, they claim that the educational system of home schooling is sub-standard and does not meet the normal system of education.

Second, the curriculum is not approved and it does not meet the criteria.

Third, the quality of education is not adequate.

Fourth, the kids who are educated under home schooling do not get a opportunity to socialize with other children from different ethnic and social backgrounds. In this manner, such students are prone to becoming religiously or socially intolerant.

Fifth, the students are not exposed to societal ups and downs and they see only a one-sided view of society. Parents unwittingly shield their kids from a true multi-sided picture of society. Such children face hardship in adjusting to society because they are brought up in an artificial environment.

Two, parallel societies are brought about by adopting two different educational systems i.e. home schooling and formal schooling. These two parallel societies cannot mix easily and do not collaborate well together. The standards of the community and citizenship are not uniformly met by both societies.

However, home schooling is definitely a sensible option for individuals living a long way from schools and immigrants. If suitable standards of education are taken into account, home schooling can be the more worthwhile option.
