Chronicle of Computer Game Playing

By Fred Mast

The frenzy of PC gaming started shortly after the formation of the desktop age had came to be. Back in the days when Microsoft was selling its very traditional operating systems such as Microsoft DOS, desktop games like CD man, Paranoid and Prince of Persia were prevalent. The term computer gamer may not have meant the equivent as it does nowadays , but it certainly existed.

Back then, gaming was just developing as a pastime among those desktop users who chose to spend their free time seated before a desktop screen instead of a TV screen or dedicated gaming unit. Less than ten percent of the people who owned a PC fell into this class, not forgetting the fact that less than five percent of the U.S. even owned a computer. This vital piece of data alone gives one quite a thorough insight into the state of computer gaming at the beginning.

Everyone naturally wants to know how did desktop gaming become so expensive? Basic desktops even nowadays don't come with high end video cards. Desktop engineers do not provide these pieces of hardware standard because they're exceptionally pricey and normal computing operations basically don't call for such operational enhancements. For those that are serious about competing with adequate performance, these spendy accessories are a necessity.

Some of the games mentioned above gained enormous celebrity among this group of pioneer gameplayers. Games such as Prince of Persia began to introduce the concept of a gaming franchise and game series. With this development, a totally new idea hatched in the minds of PC developers of the era. This was the idea of performance computers. So as to run the most recent games created by the top game developers, the best desktop computers were required.

As the times progressed, desktop engineers added more recent and enhanced processors to the desktops, making them quicker, longer lasting and more compact. Of course many tried building garage developed games. What resulted is that developers of today's world of desktops, in their effort to stay abreast of the latest kept on inventing more resource exhausting games that needed high end desktops to operate. Thus every gamer wanting to play required the newest and robust components in order to have a chance at playing the newest games. With the large amount of space a desktop could allow for, graphics and operation could be much bigger. Thus began the establishment of competitive gaming PCs.
