How To Use Flash Drives To Archive Computer Files

By Andrew Johnson

When you are trying to clean up your computer, the first thing you generally will go check is the pie chart that tells you how much space that your hard drive on your PC has left. If you notice that the pie only has a little sliver of space left on it, or you just want to make sure that you have something backing up your important programs and information, you are going to want to store the information elsewhere. You can do this by putting the information on flash drives.

When you are ready to do some archiving simply take a flash drive and put it into one of your USB ports that you have on your PC. You will then just need to click through some simple installation or virus checking options on your computer. This should only take a couple of seconds.

After you are done with this you will then click on the Start icon on your corner. This is always located down at the bottom left hand corner of your computer. Next you will right click on Windows Explorer or Explore from the menu.

After you have opened up Windows Explorer you will want to check all of the files that you have listed in these folders. These folders will usually open up on the left hand side of your monitor. Checking out the folders is going to take you to lists of items on your computer that you might be interested in transferring to your drive.

You will need to press and hold the control key down on your keyboard. Then just click one time on the items that you want to archive. This will highlight all the things you want to copy onto your drive. When you have them highlighted then just pick Copy.

The files are now highlighted and ready to be copied over to your drive. Find what computer drive letter your drive has been assigned and go ahead and open it up. You may or may not see files already on it and this is where you are going to right click inside of. Just click anywhere in the white space and then pick the word Paste. This will then trigger all of the files to be transferred from your computer. Depending upon how many files and how big they are will determine how long this will take.

Continue to do this until you have all the files transferred to your flash drives that you want to save and archive. If the whole idea of doing this was to clean up some space on your computer then you will need to go back and find all the files you transferred and delete them off of your computer.
