Acer May Lead The Price Surge Of PC

By Kate Green

The Thailand floods tightened the global supply of hard disks, so the price of hard drives increased significantly. In order to ensure profitability, PC makers have to increase price to deal with it.

Recently, the world's fourth largest PC vendor Acer announced that, taking into account the rise in cost caused by the increasing price of the hard drive, Acer may increase the price of its PC products in mid-November. Asus, Apple and other manufacturers are conducting assessment or following to adjust the price. This is indeed the most concerned about of the global PC industry. It is estimated the global impact will last for six months.

Thailand is the world's second largest hard drive manufacturer, accounting for 40% of the global production capacity. Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung and other hard drive manufacturers have their own factories in Thailand. Especially the largest hard drive manufacturer Western Digital's production capacity in Thailand is 60% of its total production capacity.

However, Thailand's flood makes the Western Digital, Hitachi (http://www.watchesmanufacturers.com/), Toshiba and other hard drive manufacturers in Thailand have to close. Although Seagate, Samsung's factories are not directly damaged by the floods, because of the power supply, logistics are affected by the floods, many of the facilities manufacturers are damaged in the floods. The production capacity has also been hit. Western Digital said that it requires six months for the factory to resume production.

Due to the impact of the floods in Thailand, 25 percent of the global supply of the hard drive has been affected. The analysts pointed out that all the world's personal computer manufacturers are withstanding pain. The smaller size of the enterprise the larger the pain. This pain will be shared by every consumer through the market price in the short term.

The major brands have more than one month's inventory, so even though Thailand floods will lead to global short supply of the hard drive, by mid-December, large brand manufacturers will not have shortages. Hard disk has 4 or 5 major components. The delivery time is 2 months. From the mid-December to the February of the next year, the world's hard disk will have 25% of shortage.
