Computer Repair Workers Common Duties

By Richard Prollic

Computer repairs are done by repair technicians. Technicians work on computers and their servers. Sometimes they even build or configure hardware, create and maintain networks, and install and update software. Technicians can work in public and/or private fields.

Technicians can work in many different types of settings; they may work for a retail store that sells and does maintenance on computers, a corporate company in their information technology department, a service centre, or they may even own their own business. They can also work for public entities such as law enforcement, some level of government, education, national security, the military, or a public and health safety company.

No matter where they work, technicians perform similar tasks. The more experienced technicians usually specialize in special fields, such as information systems, data recovery, and system administration. Technicians are able to fix a wide variety of problems. Some are minor like spyware, replacing hardware, or viruses, while other problems are more complex.

Many technicians even work on-site for a set fee or an hourly rate whereas others may utilize drop-off services.

There are five main categories of hardware repair that technicians engage in: laptops, computer clusters, desktop computers, servers, and smartphones or mobile computing. Input devices are often repaired by the user, but sometimes a technician will oversee these as well, such as scanners, keyboards, and mice. The same goes for output and data storage devices, such as speakers, printers, screens, and hard drives (internal and external).

Software can be difficult to work on as computer repair technicians must try to protect the users original settings and data. Some problems are minor and take a simple adjustment of preferences or settings, while other problems require more involved techniques such as uninstalling, installing, or reinstalling certain software. This is why is it essential to back up any personal files or data on external media so that it is not destroyed if there is a problem.
