Should You Invest in a Durable Laptop?

By Allyson Westcot

Rugged systems are special computers built to face up to a lot more wear and tear. Some are made a bit more rugged, like business-rugged models, while others go from semi-rugged to fully-rugged. Ultra-rugged are usually tablet computers designed to face up to the elements. These computers usually cost quite a bit more than standard laptops and tablets because of the additional features that permit them handle rain, cold, heat, dust, vibration, shock and more. Is it worth the extra money for you to invest your funds in a rugged system?

Rugged Computers aren't Mandatory for Everybody

While the concept of an extra-durable PC likely appeals if you've ever dropped a costly laptop or spilled liquid onto the keyboard, you really should know that rugged systems aren't for everyone. While you can, of course, purchase one without having any special qualifications, it's unlikely that everybody needs this kind of computer.

If you work on your laptop at home or just take it to the library now and then, if you're just a casual PC user or even a student, it's unlikely that the cost difference between a regular portable and a rugged one would be worthwhile.

Who Benefits from Durable Technology

If you have got a very light laptop that's practically as thin as a paper notebook and very slim, you probably wouldn't appreciate the bulkier footprint of rugged technology. Thanks to the reinforcements, particularly on fully-rugged models, they often weigh more and have a sturdy casing. The primary reason they might not be worth it to you is that you simply don't need the features they contain.

If you're a business user who only uses a PC at your desk, the investment into a rugged system potentially will not be worth the additional money. If you take a portable with you while traveling and work on the go, particularly if you carry a laptop in the field and use it during the day, then a rugged model could be ideal.
