Information And Details About Visual Effects

By Leslie Lello

Many popular movies today use visual effects in the production process. They can be computer generated or live action scenes that are added into a shot or scene. Sometimes they combine the two and create a hybrid image with a live action scene with actors and then add in the visual sequence of a computer scene.

Studios usually use the techniques to add in a real image and for shots that would usually be too dangerous or expensive to shoot with conventional actors. Also stunt doubles are used in some cases for a specific shot. Computer generated images are probably the most common form of an effect used in Hollywood today.

There has been many advancements in hardware and software programs that allow studios to add in scenes. Many big budget movies will always have them added into several of the shots. Action, science fiction, and fantasy movies are the ones that most commonly make use of the technique. Many times special shots can also be animated and drawn together in a special sequence.

Timing of the shots has to be perfect for the audience to be able to believe it. Much of the work takes place in separate special studios where it is edited and changed to suit the needs of the director. If any changes are agreed upon then the sequence must go together and fit the scene. Many times the editor and director are in charge of this process.

Throughout movie history visual effects have been used in various ways. Even in some of the oldest known movies there have been scenes where the technique was used. Many times now a special production supervisor is in charge of editing and choreographing the planned production. Broadway shows, amateur film makers, professional directors and many others all at some point usually take advantage of the ability to add in special sequences into their productions.

There are different categories that are normally used. Models can be used with miniature sets with animatronics and the stop motion process. Some live action scenes with blue and green screens can be used to add in live action events into a specific scene. Different background elements are used that include paintings or digital photos. One of the most common varieties used is digital animation and computer enhanced graphics. Special lighting is also used many times to add into three dimensional scenes.
