Samsung Galaxy Note: Phone Or Tablet Computer?

By Paul Barber

Phones like HTC Titan and Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX push the limits of what pros deem as sufficient smartphone sizes, so that the Samsung Galaxy Note is pretty much straddling the demarcation line between smartphone and tablet PERSONAL COMPUTER . Thus, one question has been steadfastly cropping up: So is it a phone or a tablet?

Hardware

Admittedly, smartphone and tablet PC hardware have only a few differences, including display size, and the Samsung Galaxy Note manages to obscure the line further. It has got a dual-core 1.4 GHz Exynos processor (1.5 GHz Snapdragon S3 on other alternatives), a 5.3 in. WXGA HD Super AMOLED screen that may output a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, 1 GB RAM, and 16 GB of storage that's extendable to up to 32 GB.

The Note also has an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash for the rear and a 2 megapixel cam for the front and can record 1080p/30 fps video. It includes more sensors than the average Joe would need: proximity and ambient light sensors, compass, accelerometer, and barometer in addition to more correct positioning systems A-GPS and GLONASS.

Software

When the Note first rolled out, it came with Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread joined with TouchWiz UI 4.0. It included preloaded apps like Polaris Office and Crayon Physics Luxury. Reports confirm the Note will soon be receiving the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), an update that is anticipated to bring great new features and more support for the Note's S Pen.

Phone or Tablet?

Apart from the monitor size, one other feature on the Samsung Galaxy Note made waves in tablet Personal computer news: the S Pen. Some smartphone and tablet Personal computer reviews have regarded the stylus with some derision (likening it to the styluses on traditional PDAs), while others found it nifty for making quick notes and for taking and annotating screen-captures.

As for the telephone or tablet PERSONAL COMPUTER question , the Samsung Galaxy Note is officially a phone. Whether you look at it as a very small tablet COMPUTER or an especially big smartphone is a case of your personal opinion, though if the Goldilocks rule is applied (as some tablet PC comparison sites have pointed out), then the Samsung Galaxy Note could be classified in the "just right" class.
