Mobile Workers and the Need to Sync Data

By Allyson Westcot

More than lots of other casual laptop users, people who use rugged laptops often have a need for recent information that they can share across a number of platforms. Because these computers are specifically designed for working in the field and while traveling, the power to take info input into the laptop PC and share it with a smartphone, a PDA or a tablet PC may be critical to smooth business operations.

The most important side of syncing information is to get a system you're comfortable with and that you understand. If you are confused by the procedure , you're less likely to sync the info and that may cause issues. A file that is only updated on one system might result in misunderstanding, wrong info and lots of wasted time.

Many individuals email themselves every document they desire to be certain to keep a copy of. Some basically sync information manually. Using a CD-Rom, a USB drive or other removable gadget you can copy the document from your rugged system to another computer. You'll have to do that every time something changes to keep the files in sync, however, which can result in a large amount of work, especially if the documents are accessed frequently.

The best method is real-time syncing between devices like a rugged system and a tablet or PDA system, or even a desktop computer or other portable computer that isn't taken in the field. If you do this, and you happen to have devices where both copies of your information are kept in one place, keep in mind that a fire, flood or theft could still make all of your data disappear.

To really save data from these possible issues, the most effective way to sync information involves cloud computing, where files are placed in "the cloud," or online and synced between your devices at once, or an application that can handle syncing jobs for you. A copy stays online in your virtual account, which won't be affected by anything that happens to your personal computer or your backups.
