Internet and Home Surveillance

By Alexandre Pantillori

A few years ago you had no way of keeping an eye on things at home cheaply and easily while you were overseas on a vacation or business trip. These days however, keeping tabs on your home while you're away is quite possible. Even when you're on the other side of the world you can keep an eye on your property and all you need is a mobile Internet enabled device and of course, an Internet connection.

The technology may sound hi-tech but it's certainly not out of reach for most people. Hardware for security monitoring has really dropped in price lately and anybody can use it from virtually any place in the world. All it takes is someone with a bit of common sense and the curiosity to try new and exciting technology.

Of course, to take advantage of this technology you'll need a decent Internet connection. The Internet is the underlying technology that has made keeping an eye on your home from great distances possible. When considering an Internet powered surveillance system first make sure that you have adequate bandwidth to your home. Using dial-up Internet would be an exercise in frustration because the speed just isn't adequate for broadcasting video.

You have two methods of surveillance to choose from depending on the features and complexity that you require. One method requires the use of a PC. Several surveillance cameras are stringed together and set up to record what they see or to only activate once movement is detected in an area. Price will be the biggest determining factor on whether or not you can adjust these settings.

The computer plays the part of security screen and video recorder. You can view the playback via the monitor in real time or play a file that has been recorded to the HDD or hard disk drive. You"ll need to connect the computer to the Internet through an ISP (Internet Service Provider), in order to watch the video from a distance. To watch the video while you are away from home you will need to log into the computer with a unique username and password. Simply log in at your convenience to keep tabs on your property and view any video that may have been recorded.

The other solution you have available is much easier. You would normally only be using one camera to keep an eye on your home. With this setup you will be able to use one camera through your IP (Internet Protocol) address. By setting it up through your IP, all you need to do is check on things is to link directly to your IP address. This method works similar to a webcam, in the sense that it streams video around the clock.

No matter which solution you choose, both are somewhat easy to use. Of course the second solution is much easier to use and setup, although it does have it's downsides as well. Both systems have great features and both have the ability to log in at any time.

Anytime you need to monitor your home from far away, home surveillance and the Internet is all you need. The Internet is available from many places all over the world and is exceeding at tasks that many people thought impossible a few short years ago. With minimal investment you can now keep track of what's happening around your home wherever in the world you are.
