Adware is a program usually attached to freeware and shareware you download from the internet. These programs display two kinds of ads - pop-up and pop-under - even if you are not connected to the Internet. More often than not, this comes about as a result of someone agreeing to all the terms of a license agreement.
On the other hand, spyware literally spies on each and every thing you do on your computer - it is similar, but even worse than adware. This is often used in conjunction with strategic product placement or marketing campaigns, as the program would transfer what should mostly be your browsing habits back to the parent company that created it in the first place. Worse, you may even encounter spyware that gathers not just your browsing habits, but your identifying information as well, and sends it to third parties who are likely up to no good. Without a doubt this is against the law, but more often than not, you would not realize that your privacy is invaded until it's too late.
At this point, you may be like millions of people around the world who naively coast along the World Wide Web, probably thinking that these targeted ads might just convince you to buy something someday. Just remember the fact that you may have Spyware that you are not aware of gathering things like your credit card info. Other, more apparent, problems you may experience even with Adware is that you may encounter significant deterioration of your computer systems performance & your productivity. You may eventually realize that it is taking an eternity for your computer to start up or to complete a certain task. Your browser may be studded with strange new toolbars. And you may experience the frustration of having some annoyingly cheesy default page when you start up your browser, and not being able to change it back to any other page. A lot of pop-ups are like cockroaches - it's virtually impossible to get rid of them. And you may discover some bookmarks or favorite sites you didn't authorize. Your computer starts slowing to a crawl & crashing.
Some things you can do:
Make sure, for all future downloads, you carefully read end user license agreements so Adware doesn't get installed on your computer in the first place. (Unfortunately Spyware is not disclosed so you can't prevent that).
An Adware Remover & Anti-Spyware software would be mandatory. Before purchase do some research and compare features for your short list of contenders so you can select the appropriate one.
Rerun the Adware Remover & Anti-Spyware software and any updates periodically -- weekly is suggested.
You will also want to download any patches or updates for your operating system. You can usually download this from Microsoft.
If you use the Internet everyday, refrain from using Internet Explorer - use another browser like Firefox instead. Nothing against Internet Explorer or Microsoft Windows - but since both products are so widely used, they are both very prone to both spyware and adware alike.
