Could a HDI save your business money?

By Ulah G Thompson

For many companies, using a HDI is a good alternative to a traditional LAN. This article will outline some of the main benefits of using a Hosted Desktop Infrastructure.

A HDI is a valuable asset to companies who need their employees to work at home or abroad, or whose employees need to access sensitive information which would pose a security risk if seen by the wrong people. A HDI can offer the following benefits to businesses: businesses never need to back up or update their computers, as this is done remotely, they do not need to invest in costly equipment as the hardware is also remote, they do not need to worry about their employees breaking or loosing laptops and other mobile devices as data and sensitive information is all stored on the server.

HDIs can also help to lower costs. As all the software and hardware is provided by the server, the device used to access it does not need to be a sophisticated piece of technology, it simply needs an internet connection. This means your employees can use out-of-date machines or thin clients. Thin clients have very little computing power of their own, they're small, inexpensive, consume a fraction of the power of a PC, need little or no maintenance and rarely go wrong. The HDI costs are also monthly, meaning that you do not need to put up a large initial investment.

Your data is even secure in the event of a disaster such as a flood or fire as there will be multiple servers hosted in different locations each of which contains a copy of your data. There is also the convenience of data sharing between employees. It may appear that a problem with using a HDI and not having employees in the same room would be a lack of communication and sharing of ideas, however, the HDI will come with live chat, a shared file storage allowance which all employees can access, and an integrated email system, so that colleagues can access each others' alterations to a document, and discuss them, quickly and easily.

Ultimately, using a HDI will almost certainly save you time and hassle, but only obtaining a quote can let you see if it would save you money, especially as there are several factors to consider. Factors you ought to take into account when calculating your computing-related business costs are: the cost of tech support, the cost of PC maintenance and updating, and the possibility of needing smaller, or no, office space if you had a HDI. It is also worth considering that HDI costs are a predictable monthly fee, not a sudden unexpected cost or huge initial investment.
