Best Way To Securely Erase Files On Your Computer

By Nichol Potts

Many people mistakenly believe that after they have placed a file in their recycle bin and then emptied the recycle bin the file is gone forever. Nothing could be further from the truth.

When you try to permanently try to erase a file by either placing it in the recycle bin or by deleting is that Windows won't recognize the file and therefore you do not see it when you open your desktop or a folder. The fact is that it isn't erased at all and the data remains on your hard drive and it will stay there until the data is over written by some other data or file. Although the casual wouldn't know where to look for the file, it can be found if you look on the temporary Internet or temporary documents as well as the cache. However, there is way to get rid of files permanently and forever.

This problem is especially important if you are considering trashing or recycling an old computer. Currently, there are a considerable number of people who are doing just that as the result of upgrading to another operating system.

It can be very risky to sell your old computer, hand it over to your favorites charity, or to the local school because you will still have data there that can easily be recovered by a free program that will recover that file and is available from numerous websites on the Internet. This means that anyone could have access to your personal information such as family photographs, banking passwords, or credit card information in a matter of seconds from your computer.

You will have to use your favorite search engine to find a utility to permanently and securely erase your files. Some are free and the commercial software will cost as much as $30. This is a small price to pay if you are serious about the security on your computer. Usually this commercial software will provide more features than the software that is free, and you will get much better support. In addition, this software, free or not, is the only way to securely erase a file of files prior to getting rid of your old computer. You have to erase the file right the first time because after your old computer is gone you won't have another chance to go back and use the secure erase file utility.
