Effective Web Marketing Using SEO

By Louise Dowding

A search engine like Google is a tool to help people find lists of services, products and information based on their entered search. Research has established that companies that appear high up in the results get more hits. The technique of web marketing known as (SEO) Search Engine Optimisation is the best way to reach the highest search engine position. SEO is a strong marketing tool capable of greatly boosting the amount of traffic your site receives from search engine queries, by pushing your sites ranking above that of your direct competitors sites.

Most people use the internet in their every day life for one reason or another and this makes search engines very influential. SEO can help your business to reach a vast customer base and therefore help to grow and expand your business. Because the internet is able to reach a global marketin some ways, in many ways search engine optimisation can be much more effective than TV, and print. The costs involved with TV and Radio marketing are basically limited solely to large companies. Thankfully this is not the case with SEO which offers a low cost alternative.

Search engines give you with a list of relevant web pages based on the search terms that have been entered. Puttingthe exact same data into different search engines can produce different results because of the way they the different engines process their content. Search engines use complex algorithms to figure a site's relevancy to a search term and place different weights on the importance of certain factors such as page content, how old the website is and how many inbound links are pointing to a site. Search engines reassess their algorithms occasionally to improve the speed and efficiency of their results. Regardless of the periodic changes made to their algorithms, priority is always given to offering the most interesting and relevant experience possible.

Spiders, or crawlers are the names that refer to the software programs used by the engines to trawl through web pages, explore the content and send it back to the search engines for processing. All content is indexed according to the search engine algorithm and is then stored in its databases ready to be served as search results. When a search is carried out by a user, the search engine very quickly checks it's database for the internet content that is most relevant and then retrieves and serves it as a list of results.

Part of the SEO role is to work out which search terms are normally used by individuals interested in the products and services a particular is offering. Once the most relevant keywords have been established, they can be placed in the most important positions in your websites pages. This system can significantly increase a website's search engine ranking and subsequently its profits.

The links pointing to a site are key in reaching high search engine rankings. Search engines place a huge amount of importance on the number of inbound links there are to a site. The number of inbound links can indicate to the search engine's that a site is important or great quality. In addition, factors such as the age of a site and amount of pages it has can increase a site's ranking.
