Samsung Electronics will produce the quad-core A6 processor for Apple in the plant in Austin, Texas.
It is reported that Apple is negotiating with Samsung on the shipments of the quad-core mobile processor A6. A6 processor is being used in the next generation of iPhone. Clearly, Apple thinks that Samsung is still the company's key business partner. Samsung Electronics will use 28-nanometer process to produce A6 processor. TSMC will also produce the customized version of chips for Apple, but the shipments will be small.
It is recently reported that Samsung Electronics has once again fought back against Apple, and tried to stop the sale of Apple's iPhone 4S in Australia and Japan. The Australian court last week issued a ban order on Samsung Electronics' 10.1-inches Galaxy Tab Tablet PC. However, the analysts of the industry estimate that this year alone, Apple's contribution to the revenue of Samsung is 8 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for about 5% of the total revenue of Samsung. This allows Apple to become Samsung's largest overseas customer. Sources pointed out that TSMC's process technology is currently not stable, so the overall shift to TSMC will bring Apple risks.
In March, there were reports that Apple tried to turn the manufacturing of A5 processor from Samsung Electronics to TSMC, but Apple's attempt was not successful. However, it is reported that Apple and the chip maker TSMC have formed a partnership. It is reported in July of this year the TSMC pilot produced A6 processor by using the 28-nanometer process and 3D stacking technology.
The providers that replace the chips are not easy. This process often takes several years to complete. Therefore, Apple will continue to outsource chip manufacturing to Samsung Electronics until TSMC is completely ready. At the same time, Samsung made it clear that Apple will not reach a comprehensive patent cross-licensing agreement. Despite the recent setbacks suffered, Samsung will continue launch the offensive patents lawsuit against Apple in many countries.
It is said that Samsung has already done the long-term struggle. It is predicted that in the first few months of 2012 Apple will launch cheap iPad Mini.
