Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks are Threatening MacBook Market Share

By Dr Jonathan Rosental

Competition in the tight laptop market forces producers to offer new options. Ultrabooks are special laptops that are thin, light and cost around 1000 dollars. The competition tries to be as thin and powerful as MacBooks.

There is a well-defined specification by Intel on what laptop can be called the ultrabook. Such laptops must be less than 20 millimeters thin, lighter than 3 pounds and has a battery life of 5 to 8 hours .

Finally, the ultrabooks should quickly wake from the sleep mode and almost immediately connect to the internet. Current versions use Sandy Bridge technology but Intel plans to launch Ivy Bridge soon .

New processor accelerates computational speed and performance by 20-30% and include Near Field Communication module that allows to purchase goods and services online . USB 3.0 and PCI Express 3.0 will also be included .

Acer Aspire S5 is a recent product based on Thunderbolt interface. Acer has implemented Thunderbolt interface in its new Aspire S5 laptop. The price of Acer Aspire is not available until Intel launches Ivy Bridge. Aspire S5 is only 15 millimeters thin.

Lenovo (formerly a part of IBM share) Thinkpad X1 hybrid has not just one but two operational systems. Linux based OS can be used for media files and websites while Windows 7 is responsible for more advanced tasks.

Thinkpad by Lenovo run on Ivy Bridge available from Intel stock (for Windows 7) and ARM processor Qualcomm (for Linux). This complex infrastructure is ideal for energy saving when Qualcomm is running. However, convenience has to be paid for in the amount of 2 thousand dollars.

Another South Korean producer LG accepted Intel conditions and offers XNOTE Z330 with 13inch display. The price is another advantage of XNOTE Z330 that makes it one of the most affordable. XNOTE Z330 is about to be launched on a number of markets.

Finally, HP Envy 14 Spectre offers a 14-inch ultrabook with Gorilla Glass covering modern smart phones. In addition to great looks it also includes Ivy Bridge with NFC module. HP suggested price is in excess of many MacBook specifications. HP will distribute the machine starting from March 2012 at the price around 1600 US dollars.

For a daily stock trader who travels a lot these laptops offer an excellent opportunity to continue work on the go . With a battery life of 5 to 8 hours these laptops can easily run throughout an entire transatlantic flight to keep track of Facebook publicly traded company!

It is still not clear, however, what these ultrabooks can offer compared to an iconic MacBook. Enormous market capitalization of Apple is in part based on how Apple products are perceived by consumers.

In this situation it is not clear how Lenovo or HP will differentiate pricey ultrabooks from more budget models offered at a local Wal-Mart. Why would business people pay more than two thousand dollars for a laptop that looks like a standard cheap model?
