Are Modern Wireless Earphones Dependable?

By Rick Astley

This overview of current headphones will help you choose the right one from the overwhelming flood of types and models of corded and wireless in ear headphones.

Headphones are available in many types and designs. The smallest type are in-ear headphones. These headphones are plugged inside the ear. Several models have a bracket that wraps around the ear. In-ear headphones often are available with iPods or MP3 players. They are light-weight. Furthermore, they easily can be put in your pocket. A bigger type of headphones have earpieces that sit on the ears but are still fairly little. These headphones have an elastic frame that connects both earpieces. This frame either sits on the skull or wraps around the neck. These two types of headphones are generally the least expensive and you should consider them if you are on a budget. Some in-ear models are specifically designed to absorb exterior noise.

If you are looking for better sound quality then you should take a look at medium-end headphones which have soft ear cushions that depending on the model will be located either on your ear or around your ear. The second type decreases the pressure on the ear. For that reason many people prefer this design. The next decision you'll have to make is between an open and closed headphone design. An open design basically means that the sound from the transducer can diffuse to the outside of the headphones. It can also cross-couple into the other earpiece. While some people believe that an open design sounds light, a closed design will tend to absorb external noise more and offer improved insulation between the two earpieces.

The bulk of today's headphones are dynamic which refers to the type of transducer that is used. The second more expensive sort which requires particular headphone amplifiers are static headphones.

If you favor liberty of movement then you should look at wireless headphones. Wireless headphones cut the cable. This means that you have full freedom of movement which is crucial if your audio source is not mobile. One choice to consider are Bluetooth headphones. Bluetooth headphones are a sort of cordless headphones which are designed for Bluetooth-enabled products. Such products include mobile phones. These headphones are typically rather small but do not offer the same sort of audio quality as medium to high-end headphones.

Other wireless headphones frequently work at 900 MHz and use FM transmission. These headphones are the least expensive wireless option. More advanced digital wireless headphones work at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz. The major downside of FM headphones is a noticeable hissing, audio distortion and fairly high susceptibility to interference which I caused by the transmission.

Other types of wireless headphones are digital wireless headphones. This type of headphones will encode the audio prior to transmission which prevents any audio distortion during the transmission and assures high reliability against interference. Digital wireless headphones which operate at the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band have less problems with competing wireless products than headphones working at 2.4 GHz.
