Diverse Forms of Media in Visual Graphic Arts

By Gina Parks

Painting, drawing, sculpting and even photography contain within each category a variety of different methods and media that create different effects and different works of art. Art that is produced depends solely on the genre the artist is trying to cater to.

Artists can paint with oil or water colors. Paint surfaces can have an extreme effect on the way a painting may turn out. Size and types of paint brushes can affect paint strokes and the total look on a painting.

Drawing provides many outlets for visual graphic art in media. The many tools used for drawing including ink, pencil, pastels, charcoal, chalk and markers all create unique pieces of art. Artists draw on an array of surfaces including paper, plastic or sometimes leather.

Sculptors can use almost any material to carve on that can be cut through. The processes used in sculpting depend on the media being used. When working with wood, the process of subtraction is used, where parts of the material are 'subtracted' or carved away. Subtraction is a way to carve stone and marble.

Clay and ceramics have to be constantly tampered with in order to be molded in the preferred shape or form. Anything that requires sculpting, including clay modeling requires a lot of manipulation.

Adding pieces to complete a sculpture is known as addition. Metal sculptures use a variety of pieces to compose a significant piece of art. Sand is continuously added to sand sculptures to complete a piece of art.

Many environmental sculptures feature an assortment of materials designed using the process of substitution.

Using Black and white, and color photography is a theme that has been used consistently in media. The same photograph taken in color or in black and white can appear very different, as black and white photography tends to show the light and its effect with more contrast than color photography does. Analog and digital media can create different effects, as film photography tends to give more grain to the photograph. The way a photo may print is dependent upon the type of photo paper.

The different media used in visual graphic arts has a definite, visible outcome on the appearance of the finished work. It is important to review the different types of visual graphic art media to find what is right for the artist. There are no rules to producing breathtaking art pieces using graphic media. That's the beauty of art - it can be experimental, innovative and of course must be creative.
