He has not upgraded anything and he thinks it functions perfectly for his needs. I also really like the design, and the royal blue is a very nice color!
While I'll never be a Windows convert, this is a great little machine that lets me get my work done. I removed some of the Toshiba-ware, loaded Open Office and a free anti-virus program, and I am there. All the keys are the same size as a standard computer the only difference being this computer has no number pad on the side, just the numbers across the top, which works wonderfully. I am however a dance major. I wanted the Asus Netbook but chose the Toshiba as it had almost the same set up and was about $50.00 less. So far it has worked very well with no issues, boots up fast and is ready for surfing or whatever.
I upgraded to the Windows 7 Premium for the $20.00 fee and am glad I did as the starter version does not allow personalization of things like power management, and has no real good media center. Battery life seems pretty good so far. I am never bothered by the size because the quality is superb. This wasn't really a "selling point" for me as I'm not someone who needs the screen to be true to color but it is a nice perk. I didn't add anything and am working on Windows Starter. The only difference with Word and Word Starter is you have to deal with a sidebar that has ads and stuff on it. A little slow but that's what I expected. There is nothing that impedes my usage.
When you buy the extra RAM, just make sure that your model is the correct one for the ram you are buying. If there is a D3 on the bottom of the laptop, it is a DDR3 model. The Amazon description of the product indicates DDR2, which is what I purchased. After receiving the product, opening it to install the RAM, I was immediately annoyed to find that it required DDR3 RAM. You have to sort of pry the card out when you want it out, but if you leave a card docked there, like I do, it's not a problem and it doesn't dangerously stick out the side of the machine when you are putting it into a case. Plus they save the cost and complexity of a spring.
The Amazon description and most of the "reviews" available online indicate this netbook has the feature. If you go to the Toshiba website, you can figure this out if you know what you're looking for. I'm a little concerned about overheating--but laptop coolers are fairly inexpensive, and I'm sure with it on my lap, it will get some air circulation. Probably can't say the same thing about the floor.
It has full size keys. I was able to connect this baby on my big screen TV and I was able to watch streaming movies for free on my big screen.
Something I could use for internet and email (while traveling), something I could watch Netflix on when I was in a room without a TV. So far I can do all of the above even though I'm working on the 1G memory card (the 2G is ordered).
